Un team di chirurghi Australiani del St Vincent’s Hospital, a Sydney, ha comunicato una notizia davvero significativa per la scienza: è stato effettuato il primo trapianto nella storia utilizzando un cuore del tutto morto. Di solito il cuore viene prelevato dal donatore mentre sta ancora battendo, dopo che è stata dichiarata la morte cerebrale, invece in questo caso il cuore è stato trapiantato dopo che aveva già smesso di battere da ben venti minuti!La paziente che ha ricevuto il cuore nuovo dice di sentirsi in ottima forma. “Mi sento un altra, con dieci anni di meno!” Avrebbe dichiarato la donna. Secondo il Prof Peter MacDonald, a capo dell’unità trapianti del St Vincent, si tratta di un grandissimo progresso per la scienza mondiale, che potrebbe consentire di salvare almeno il 30% in più dei pazienti bisognosi di un trapianto. La nuova tecnica è stata possibile grazie a una nuova macchina, denominata “heart in a box”, letteralmente “cuore in una scatola”. (M.I.)
