Janis Joplin nasce il 19 Gennaio 1943, a Port Arthur, in Texas e si afferma come cantante negli anni ’60, per la sua voce rauca e graffiante.

Ottiene il successo inizialmente nel gruppo Big Brother and the Holding Company, che abbandona dopo il secondo album, per intraprendere la carriera solista. Nel 1969 incide il disco I Got Dem Ol’ Kozmic Blues Again Mama!, nel quale troviamo la celebre Try just a little be harder. Indelebile nel tempo anche la sua personale e profonda interpretazione dei pezzi di George Gershwin, Summer time e Piece of My Heart. 

 

In Pearl (1971), suo album postumo, lascia un segno la canzone Cry baby, che diventa, negli anni ’90, anche la colonna sonora del film Senti chi parla.

 

Nell’Agosto del 1969, Janis partecipa al Festival di Woodstock, condividendo apertamente lo stile di vita hippy e affermando l’uguaglianza tra bianchi e neri.

 

La sua carriera viene stroncata nel 1970, a soli 27 anni, a causa di un’ overdose e se ne va così una cantante blues rock che arriva a toccare l’anima con la sua voce. Ispirata dalla sua musica, ho voluto dedicarle un quadro, che, per me, riassume la sua personalità: eccentrica, colorata ma al contempo malinconica.
